When darkness turned to light

Margarette battled depression from a young age, feeling lost and without purpose. Years later, she surrendered her life to Christ and peace and hope replaced the fear and despair.

When Margarette was 17, she was diagnosed with depression. From a Chinese Buddhist background, she experienced a long stretch of personal and family struggles that wore her down. Unsure of what to do, her parents took her to a psychiatrist who prescribed her a heavy load of antidepressants to take every day. But instead of helping, the medication made it hard for Margarette to function; she was constantly drowsy, unable to concentrate and lost all motivation to study. Eventually, Margarette stopped attending school regularly and stayed home most of the time. She felt deeply sad, aimless and without purpose — like she was disappearing into the background of her own life.

In desperation, Margarette's father turned to a medium, hoping for any kind of help. However, a friend suggested they visit a Church instead. It was there that Margarette encountered something different, something peaceful. She felt, for the first time in a long while, truly seen and loved.

As time went on, with support and prayer, Margarette gradually stopped taking the medication, and things slowly began to feel lighter. Then, after a while, she stopped going to church. The days stretched on, and the distance between her and that once-felt comfort quietly grew.

After getting married, the shadows crept back in and the depression that Margarette thought she had left behind returned quietly and heavily. This time, it wasn’t just her. That same heavy sorrow she had once carried seemed to find its way into the hearts of her children too.

Bringing hope

One day, Margarette confided in a close friend about her struggles. With kindness and care, the friend encouraged her to meet with a pastor. In January 2025, Kevin, a Jesus follower who volunteers with OM, visited Margarette and her husband. As he spoke about bringing our burdens to the feet of Jesus, a spark of hope was rekindled in Margarette’s heart — something she hadn’t felt in a very long time. This was how God opened the door for Kevin to start a Discovery Bible Study (DBS) in Margarette’s house.

During one of the DBS meetings, Kevin spoke about Jesus’ love, His sacrifice and the forgiveness He offers. Something deep within her was stirred, and Margarette knew she couldn’t let the moment pass. With a heart full of peace, she made the decision to return to God and surrendered her life to Jesus.

That decision marked the beginning of true transformation. At the end of March 2025, she was baptised, and since then, Margarette has experienced the peace of God and a renewed hope for the future.

Margarette now spends regular time in the Lord's presence through prayer and reading the Word. In this quiet devotion, she discovered a peace and hope she had never known before. Over time, God revealed Himself to her as a loving and merciful Father.

One of her greatest joys came from witnessing the change in her husband’s heart. At first, Gerard* had been hesitant, still searching for tangible proof to place his faith in Jesus. But one Wednesday afternoon, during a regular meeting of Jesus followers, their son suddenly became violent and began breaking things around the house. Gerard tried everything to calm him, but nothing worked.

In that moment of helplessness, Kevin gently encouraged Gerard to open his heart and invite Jesus in. That moment became a powerful turning point. Gerard surrendered his life to Christ, and from that day on, Margarette saw doors begin to open — opportunities for their family to grow closer to God. Even their children began to change, touched by this new peace that entered their home.

Margarette had been freed from fear, anxiety and depression. Her life is no longer defined by brokenness, but by the healing presence of Christ. Jesus didn’t just save the family; He stepped into their pain and brought restoration.

As the OM team continues to meet at Margarette’s place, please pray for her children — that they may come to know the Lord personally and be freed from any bondage holding them captive. Pray especially for deliverance from depression and for strength and perseverance to complete their studies. May God’s light break through the darkness, bringing healing, hope and transformation to their lives.
