Despite the risk of persecution, a shepherd gave his life to Christ after understanding that his disability was not because of karma or his sins: “Jesus is the only way.”
In a remote Himalayan village 4,200 metres above sea level, Kersang*, an OM worker in South Asia, met Pemba*, a shepherd. It was there, while Kersang was helping to set up some greenhouses for the community, that he gave Pemba a solar-powered audio player.
Pemba’s hand had been permanently injured in an accident. “Was this caused by my bad karma or sin?” asked Pemba. Kersang explained the story of the blind man in John 9:1-3. “In this true story, we can see,” explained Kersang, “that neither the man nor his parents’ sin caused the disability. Instead, his blindness happened so that a work of God might be displayed in his life.”
After a long discussion, Pemba and his wife were eager to commit their lives to Jesus. Kersang asked: “Are you sure that you want to do that, because there will be significant challenges from your Buddhist community and family if you do?” Pemba replied: “You chose to follow Jesus because you knew it was the only way, so we want to do the same.”
